Where were you when the lights went out? (Discussion)

Today marks the 5th anniversary of the Toronto/GTA Blackout. 5 years ago, the city was blanketed in darkness. People panicked, elevators froze, lights were turned off and you could actually see the stars in the city.

Even if you don’t live in Toronto, you may have heard of the event. What do you think blackouts such as this have to say about our energy consumption?

What experience did you have when the blackout hit?

Feel free to comment about other experiences as well that have snapped you back into reality about our consumption habits.

I bought a T-shirt of “I survived the TO Blackout”! Now I’m looking for a T-shirt of “I survived the 2008 TO explosions!”. Anybody got one?

The blackout wasn’t that bad outside of the city. I guess there’s less buildings and other electricity-dependent structures, so it’s less of a disaster. But it was pretty clear that energy consumption was too high (though it may have been New York’s fault, I can’t remember).

I think I snapped into energy reality when I started paying for my own gas… now that’s where things get ugly. So now I barely drive, and both my wallet and the environment should be happier.

I was sitting at home, in British Columbia, comfortably saying to myself, “I’m certainly glad I don’t live there!”. Now I do live here… what was I thinking? ;)
