Degree Programs in Sustainability (Discussion)

It seems to me there is very little formal education available for those wanting to go into sustainability and “green” endeavors. Do you know of any? Do you think a degree in this field would help? What degree do you wish you could find?

New College of California North Bay Campus for Sustainable Living seeks to provide students with knowledge and skills that will enable them to be effective agents of social change.

    http://newcollege.edu/northbay/index.cfm

“Our world is in a survival crisis. Our economy is based on the unsustainable consumption of resources (especially fossil fuels), destabilizing the global climate. Moreover, our inequitable social systems are undermining ecosystems, human physical and psychological health, and traditional cultures. In response, we are creating a regenerative society based on respect for natural cycles and the dignity and intrinsic value of all persons, cultures, and ecosystems.”

I really wish these were offered online. I’m having trouble finding any interesting degrees in sustainability, green building, etc that are offered online. If you know of any, please post them.

We have some great ones in North Carolina.

Appalachian State has a concentration in sustainable technology for it’s industrial tech majors. That includes everything from wind power to green building to electric vehicles. (http://www.asu.edu)

Central Carolina Community College has one of the only sustainable agriculture degree programs in the US. (http://www.ccccc.edu)

Permaculture is a design system oriented toward building sustainable solutions. “Building” not just in the sense of architecture, rather the idea of creating…starting with ourselves..and then working out into the broader community…..

UniGaia-Brasil offers an on-line in-depth Permaculture course, which is availbale in english as well as portugues. The course is on-line and collaborative, and while individuals could undertake it, the program is much more effective where a small group of people in a region undertake the course together. This group could be a local organisation or someone local could gather/promote a local group. In its fullest extent the course involves two “face to face” workshops, facilitated by someone from the UniGaia-Brasil team, and 12 months of collaborative learning.
